Decompression Therapy
Phase 1- Consists of a light therapy treatment. By pre-treating prior to beginning decompression, the patient benefits from relaxation of muscle spasms, and relief of minor muscle and joint aches.
Phase 2- Consists of decompressing the intervertebral discs relieving pain associated with herniated discs, protruding discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome and sciatica.
Phase 3- Consists of core strengthening exercises. Once pain has diminshed, it is recommended that the patient begins an exercise program to stregthen supportive core muscles and improve flexibility.
Mechanical Spinal Decompression
Decompression is a comprehensive program to relieve certain spinal dysfunctions. Mechanical decompression is a physical modality that has been used to treat various spinal dysfunctions since treatment techniques have been recorded.
Static decompression (Supine Position)- Many clinicians find static decompression most effective for addressing patients with disc bulge and associated root entrapment.
Static decompression (Prone Position)- Since the intervertebral discs are anterior structures, extension of the lumbar spine can result in a degree of unloading of the forces placed upon the disc structures. It is not uncommon for clinicians to employ extension postures and exercises to treat disc herniation.
